The Castle

The building of the castle with its 14 rooms, the chapel and the remaining park are currently located inside the village. It is hard to determine the style of the castle, which has probably been expanded with new building parts. It was originally a simple country mansion, the windows of which were ornamented by beautifully designed window decorations. The fine bars were prepared by qualified royal smiths with artistic precision - these provide a special characteristic for the castle.

There is a cellar under a part of the castle, but a smaller cellar can also be found under the residence. The six-sided Catholic chapel also belonged to the castle. Their used to be a fresco depicting angels on its ceiling, which was neglected and therefore finally crashed.

After World War II., the buildings were totally ravaged – some of the doors and the windows were also taken and the roof was damaged at some places. The buildings were used as warehouses starting from 1948. The mansion was renovated by the local farmers’ cooperative for high costs, and the cooperative’s offices were placed to the castle in 1963. The direct neighborhood of the castle was also ravaged in March, 1945, and family houses were built in the original castle garden. (Picture 6)

The castle has been uninhabited since the liquidation of the farmers’ cooperative in the first half of the 1990’s; the castle’s condition has become worse and worse - it has been deliberately damaged several times. The buildings have been declared a monument to be protected by the competent Heritage Authority.

The Local Government of Gyula bought the buildings with 7.136 m2 surface area in 1995, and their renovation and practical use have been attempted several times. Körös-Maros Foundation bought the property in 2004.
