The aim of environmental protection is to prevent and eliminate the harmful consequences of people’s industrial, agricultural and mining activities. The scientific backgrounds of these activities are mostly provided by technical sciences, applied natural sciences and economy. The efficiency of environmental protection can only be assured through laws concerning the responsibilities of the citizens and the institutional system. The biggest challenge is how to assure environmental protection and constant economical development at the same time in the long term. The environmental policy of the EU is based on the principle that strict environmental regulation stimulates innovation and creates new business possibilities.

Hungary has also been obliged to apply and keep the environmental rules of the EU since joining the Community. However the regulations have to be flexible enough to consider local conditions and characteristics as well.

The European Union’s environmental activities and policy are based on the action program called “Environment 2010: Our future, our choice”, which focuses on the following points:

  • climate change and global warming;
  • natural life, wild animals and plants;
  • environment and medical care;
  • natural resources and recycling.

The EU is planning to solve problems which involve more of the listed points through thematic strategies, which deal with air pollution; the prevention of trash production and supporting recycling; the marine life; the soil; chemicals; the recycling of resources and the urban environment.

Over the above mentioned, the action program also emphasizes how important the following things are:

  • all the concerned organizations must keep the current regulations;
  • the EU must consider the environmental consequences of all its politics which have an effect on the environment;
  • all the participants of the business sector and all the consumers must have the opportunity to participate in solving environmental problems;
  • the civilians of the European Union must always be informed in connection with environmental questions in order to make environmentally good decisions;
  • the civilians of the EU must know how important the rational use of the land and the preservation of natural life is, and that the original character of certain regions must be kept.
